The "Capo Rizzuto" Marine Protected Area extends over an area of 42 km of coastline, which goes from Capo Colonna, a true archaeological site symbolizing the glories of Magna Graecia, up to Punta Le Castella home to the famous Aragonese Fortress. The protected area is fascinating and evocative because it welcomes and skilfully mixes history and nature: it is in fact a glimpse of the sea in the Mediterranean characterized by the variety of naturalistic environments and the particular geomorphology of the coast.

The castle was built on top of a pre-existing construction, in fact scholars believe that the area of the castle coincides with the acropolis of ancient Siberene. Today the castle houses the Santa Severina museum, where the finds from the excavations and other archaeological materials and collections from the neighboring area are exhibited. It also hosts the Calabrian Castles and Fortifications Studies Documentation Center as well as art exhibitions, artistic craftsmanship exhibitions and concerts.
